Julie Filion is a ceramic artist based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, her early years were shaped by the presence of the Great Lakes, where time spent outdoors fostered a deep connection to the natural world through it's textures, rhythms, and quiet details.
After studying Earth and Environmental Sciences and later Fashion Design, Julie returned to exploring clay in 2017. What began as evening classes gradually evolved into a dedicated practice, and she now works full-time from her home studio, where each piece is created slowly and intuitively.
Working primarily in clay, Julie creates tactile, sculptural forms that explore texture, stillness, and the subtle rhythms of land and sea. Her work draws from New Zealand’s landscapes, tidal pools, rugged coastlines, fungi, and the intricate, often overlooked details found in nature.
Approaching making as both process and inquiry, she embraces experimentation and imperfection, allowing forms and surfaces to evolve organically. Texture remains at the core of her work, with layered surfaces and earthy and oceanic tones.
